VICTORIA TWEAD * ENTREPRENEUR / AUTHOR * Almeriá, Spain

In this issue of New Frontier the focus was on education. I interviewed British property-preneur Victoria Twead who switched from flipping real estate investments to flipping book pages. She sold up and moved to a mountain village in Spain and wrote a book about it. Victoria shares with us her insights on self-education and self-discipline.

BRIEF PROFILE:
Name: Victoria Twead
Nationality: British
Current Living / Working Location/s: Almeriá Province, Spain
Type of Enterprises: Past: Teacher, small business owner, Property Developer
Present: Author
Years in Operation: 5 years

Do you consider yourself an entrepreneur, deal-maker, educator, investor – all of the above?
Please explain briefly...
In the past, yes, all of the above. In England I was a teacher, I set up 3 successful businesses and it was working up the Property Ladder, turning houses round quickly, that financed our move to Spain.

Q & A

Q* What type of education do you recommend to an "enterprising" person who wants to write a book?

A* Obviously you need to be able to write fluently and reasonably correctly, but that’s just a tiny, though important, part of it. You also need observational skills, passion and self-discipline.

Q* Where do you believe the root of "educating ones self" should come from?

A* If you want to be a writer, you must read. Read the classics, read modern stuff, read every genre including your own, read newspapers, read the back of cornflakes packets. Read everything!

Q* Do you believe that without an education - you could never be an enterprising person?

A* No, anybody can be an enterprising person, but education definitely helps!

Q* What top 5 "educational tips" would help an self-motivated person achieve their goals?

A* In the case of writing a book:
1) Read everything you can lay your hands on.
2) Research and make notes. Study human behaviour, locations, past events.
3) Research other books in your genre. What makes them appealing, dull, bestsellers?
4) Write carefully. By all means get it all down on paper (or screen) in a rush, then edit and delete. Then edit and delete some more. Put it aside a while, then edit and delete some more.
5) Write with passion. If your words make you laugh and cry as you write, chances are that readers will do the same.

Q* When does "education" play its most important roles?

A* When writing a book, it must be the general grounding you received at school or college. The conventions of language, grammar rules, spelling and punctuation are all important.
